Victoria the T. Rex is a travelling exhibit of a massive, 66 million year old Tyrannosaurs fossil, which features an interactive media experience created by Animism Studios.
That's right, baby T.Rex was almost as cute as a baby duckling. Working hand-in-hand with renowned paleontologists, Animism's assets team helped create the most accurate interpretation of what
these babies looked like. The latest evidence suggests; T. Rex had a covering of downy feathers as a baby, then shed most of these feathers as they matured.
CONCEPT
DESIGN
Beginning with 3D scans of the fossil, Animism then worked with palaeontologists to conceptualize, design and render a T. Rex based on the current scientific evidence and theories.
The goal was to create a unique dinosaur with “complex patterns and colourful patches.” Animism’s CG asset team set out to define how the audience would perceive the creature.
PALEO-PLUMAGE
Adult tyrannosaursues may have been covered in complex feathers, much like modern birds. Since accuracy and realism were crucial to the project, Animism used Houdini FX software to create and simulate CG feathers complete with “quills” and “barbs”.

ACTION
Having direct access to the fossil itself, meant that Animism had the opportunity to take its live action filming crew out to the restoration lab and shoot all the footage used in the exhibits introductory video.
ENVIRONMENTS
Animism’s CG environments team took on the challenge to recreate South Dakota’s vegetation and landscape… from 66 million years ago. The team used fossil records and incorporated the latest scientific research to bring Victoria’s world into the digital age.
